3 October – Gnoche n Festa in Auronzo di Cadore
The first weekend of October begins just a short drive from Lorenzago. On the shores of Lake Santa Caterina in Auronzo di Cadore, Gnoche n Festa celebrates local food, music and traditions.
On Saturday, 3 October, the heated marquee by the lake opens from 11:00 AM. The kitchen opens at lunchtime, while music and festivities continue throughout the afternoon and evening.
As the name suggests, the stars of the festival are potato gnocchi, one of the traditional dishes of Auronzo. Other local specialties and homemade desserts are also available. Meanwhile, visitors can browse the craft market throughout the day.
Families can also enjoy activities in the Taiarezze area. These include an educational farm and traditional games for younger visitors.
Overall, it’s a wonderful way to begin an autumn weekend surrounded by local flavours, music and Dolomite scenery.
4 October – The Desmonteada: Cattle Return from the Alpine Pastures
On Sunday, 4 October, one of the most anticipated events of the weekend takes place: the Desmonteada of Auronzo. In 2026, the celebration reaches its seventh edition.
The Desmonteada celebrates one of the oldest traditions of mountain life. After spending the summer grazing on high-altitude pastures, the livestock return to the valley for autumn.
For the occasion, the cows are decorated with flowers, ribbons and traditional bells. They then parade through the streets of Auronzo accompanied by their herders.
The parade begins at 11:00 AM from the former ice rink and makes its way through the village. At 11:15 AM, the traditional blessing of the livestock takes place in Piazza Santa Giustina. Afterwards, the procession continues towards the festival area on the shores of Lake Santa Caterina.
The celebrations continue with a craft market, traditional food and live music. In addition, prizes are awarded for the finest traditional Auronzo costumes.
With decorated cattle, traditional clothing and autumn colours, the Desmonteada is one of the most characteristic October events near Lorenzago di Cadore.
14 October – Far Filò: Discovering Titian
Later in the month, the programme continues with Far Filò. This series of gatherings focuses on culture, community and the heritage of Cadore.
On Wednesday, 14 October, the event is dedicated to one of the most important figures in the history of the region: Titian, or Tiziano Vecellio.
Participants meet at 4:30 PM in Piazza Calvi in Lorenzago. From there, they travel to Pieve di Cadore for a guided visit to the exhibition “Tiziano e il paesaggio”.
The afternoon offers an opportunity to discover the connection between the great Renaissance painter and his native landscape. Therefore, it’s an interesting cultural addition to an autumn stay in the Dolomites.
28 October – Far Filò: An Autumn Chestnut Gathering
Finally, the month’s events conclude with one of the simplest and most enjoyable traditions of autumn.
On Wednesday, 28 October, at 5:30 PM, the Oratory of Lorenzago hosts a traditional chestnut gathering. The event is part of the Far Filò programme.
Roasted chestnuts, wine and good company create the perfect setting for an informal afternoon together. It’s also an opportunity to experience the strong sense of community that still characterises the small villages of Cadore.
It’s a simple event, but one that perfectly captures the atmosphere of autumn in Lorenzago.
Lorenzago in Autumn: Foliage, Walks and Peaceful Landscapes
Events are only one of the reasons to visit Lorenzago in October.
As autumn arrives, the forests surrounding the village gradually change colour. Summer greens give way to shades of yellow, orange and red. As a result, this becomes one of the most photogenic times of the year.
Cooler temperatures are ideal for walking. On clear days, the trails around Lorenzago also offer a much quieter mountain experience than during July and August.
Nearby Lake Centro Cadore and Lake Santa Caterina in Auronzo are particularly beautiful at this time of year. Autumn colours reflect in the water, with the Dolomites rising in the background.
Exploring Lorenzago, Auronzo and the Dolomites in Autumn
Lorenzago’s location makes it easy to combine local events with days spent exploring the surrounding area.
Auronzo di Cadore and its lake are only a short drive away. Pieve di Cadore is also within easy reach. Meanwhile, on clear autumn days, visitors can venture towards Misurina and some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Dolomites.
October reveals a very different side of the mountains. It’s quieter, slower and particularly appealing for those looking for nature, photography and peaceful walks.
However, autumn conditions in the mountains can change quickly. Before planning higher-altitude excursions, always check the weather and the seasonal opening of mountain huts, lifts and roads.
